MA State Inspection

State Inspections
Mon - Thur 7:30am - 6:00pm
We are closed 11:30am - 12:00pm for lunch

All vehicles registered in the state of Massachusetts must receive a safety inspection at a certified MA state inspection center each year. In addition, many vehicles are required to undergo an emissions test annually.

Seeley Automotive is an authorized MA state inspection station certified to perform both safety and emissions testing per our state's "Massachusetts Vehicle Check" program.

Stop in for Your Yearly Safety Inspection

Visit us Monday through Thursday 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM for your annual state inspection. You can also schedule an appointment using the form at the bottom of this page. Bring your vehicle registration and the $35 inspection fee with you. We accept all major credit cards.

MA State Inspection Overview

During an MA state safety inspection, different components on your vehicle will be checked visually and physically. Our state requires that the following be reviewed and/or tested:

  • Registration
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • License plate decal
  • Parking brake
  • Service brake
  • Exhaust system
  • Emission smoke color
  • Steering and Suspension
  • Windshield and windows
  • Horn
  • Wipers
  • Tint
  • Lighting
  • Reflectors
  • Tires
  • Wheels
  • Bumpers
  • Fenders
  • Floor pans
  • Fuel tank
  • Frame/Unibody
  • Height alterations
  • Seat belts
  • Airbags
  • Fuel tank cap

For many vehicles (most 2000 and newer models of light and medium-duty vehicles), an emissions inspection is also required each year. Our shop is able to perform both the safety and emissions inspections.

Passing and Failing

After your vehicle passes the MA state inspection, you'll receive a new inspection sticker along with a report detailing the results of your test. In the event that your vehicle fails inspection, you will not be able to continue legally driving it until repairs are made. If your vehicle fails due to its emissions, you are given 60 days after the test to have repairs performed and pass a re-inspection.

After repairing a problem, you can have your vehicle re-inspected for free so long as the retest is performed at the original inspection station. Please also keep in mind that drivers are entitled to only one free re-test. If you do not fix your vehicle's problems and are unable to pass inspection for the new year, your vehicle's registration will be suspended. If you have any questions or concerns about MA state inspections, we encourage you to reach out to our team.
